Chippy Champions Cup vs. Nashville, Messi takes break, Rojas update
Orlando City is Inter Miami’s geographic rival, but the spicier rival on the field is against Nashville SC.
Three times in a row Miami and Nashville ended up tied at the end of regulation, and the rivalry seems to intensify every time they play. It was due to reach a crescendo Wednesday night in the second and decisive leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16.
There were signs during the first leg, which wound up tied 2-2, that tempers could flare.
“We’ve played them enough now that there’s no fear,” Nashville defender Lukas Macnaughton said of playing Messi and Inter Miami. Macnaughton’s controversial tackle on Messi in the first round of the Champions Cup Round of 16 left the Argentine on the ground and sparked an spirited debate on social media. Earlier in the game, Messi and Luis Suarez got into it with Nashville’s Anibal Godoy, with the typically reserved Messi wagging his index finger in Godoy’s face.
Inside Inter Miami hosts Michelle Kaufman and Andre Fernandez break down the Champions Cup drama, Messi’s day off vs. Montreal, defensive woes, the latest on Matias Rojas negotiations, and more.
