Hurricanes add Mishael Powell from Washington
Miami has secured an important addition to their defense by winning over Mishael Powell, originally from Seattle and a product of O’Dea High School. Powell was a former walk-on with Washington.
The defensive back announced his commitment to the Hurricanes following an official visit. He also visited a fellow Sunshine State program, Florida.
In 2019, Mishael Powell was recruited to the University of Washington by Will Harris, who has since moved to the Florida Gators coaching staff following DeBoer’s departure for Alabama. Before Powell decided to join Miami, Harris had actively recruited him to the Gators. He has showcased impressive versatility in the secondary.
During his time at Washington, particularly as a sixth-year senior, Powell played a key role, starting all 15 games either as a slot corner or safety. His performance was instrumental in Washington’s run to the national championship game against Michigan. He had a game-winning interception for a touchdown that secured the game for the Huskies against Arizona State. A play that kept their national title dreams alive after Penix’s three interceptions.
During the last season, Powell was on the field for 876 snaps, showing remarkable flexibility by playing 477 snaps in the slot, 165 in the box, and 122 at free safety. He earned a commendable 73.9 coverage grade and contributed significantly with three interceptions, including a notable one in the Pac-12 title game against Oregon, and defended nine passes. Powell also recorded 38 tackles, 2.5 of which were for a loss, and in the national championship game, he was credited with two assisted tackles and allowed only one catch for 12 yards.
Ranked No. 89 as a transfer, Powell’s arrival at Miami is timely, as the Hurricanes look to fill the void left by departing safeties Kamren Kinchens and James Williams, who moved on to the NFL. Powell’s ability to play various positions in the secondary offers Miami a versatile defensive option. The team has also been active in reinforcing their defense, having previously acquired former Vanderbilt safety Savion Riley and top safety recruit Zaquan Patterson.
Powell’s transfer is part of Miami’s broader strategy this offseason, which includes bringing in nine transfers, notably Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward. Who played a part in recruiting Powell to Miami.
