Georgia lands Colbie Young from transfer portal: How former Miami WR fits with Bulldogs
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia has gone in the transfer portal again for a wide receiver, grabbing Colbie Young, a tall target who was Miami’s third-leading receiver this year.
Young (6 feet 5 and 215 pounds) gives Georgia a physical option on the outside to probably replace starter Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, a senior this season. Young announced the move on his Instagram account.
In 2022, Young, as a sophomore, was Miami’s second-leading receiver with 32 catches for 376 yards and five touchdowns. This season, he had 47 catches for 563 yards and five touchdowns.
A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Young spent his freshman season at a junior college and will have one year of eligibility remaining.
Where Young fits at Georgia
Georgia hasn’t made liberal use of the transfer portal the past few years, but when it has, it’s often targeted receivers. Dominic Lovett (from Missouri) and Rara Thomas (from Mississippi State) were added last year, and London Humphreys was added this month.
Even before the portal era, Georgia had success with another big receiver from Miami, Lawrence Cager, who after graduate transferring was the Bulldogs’ second-leading receiver in 2019. In that case, Georgia saw the upside and it sees it here too.
Moore was lightly recruited coming out of high school, then improved his stock his one year at Lackawanna Junior College, drawing offers from Miami, Tennessee and Penn State, among others. He had a strong debut season in a Miami offense that wasn’t very good, then put up better numbers this year as the offense improved.
At Georgia, he would fill the void left by Rosemy-Jacksaint, presuming he does leave. (The senior has the COVID-19 extra year if he wants to use it.) The receivers have speed and explosiveness with the presumed returns of Lovett, Thomas and Dillon Bell, and Humphreys will add to that. But Young gives the team another physical option and tall target for quarterback Carson Beck.
What else for Georgia?
This is Georgia’s third scholarship transfer into the program for next year and the second in two days. Defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod committed on Friday.
Georgia is the favorite to land running back Trevor Etienne, who is leaving Florida after two years.
The Bulldogs continue to look for help in targeted areas, perhaps another receiver if Ladd McConkey leaves for the NFL Draft, perhaps a safety if Javon Bullard declares. But they’re coming off signing the No. 1 signing class in the country, so help for next year can come up from the high school ranks.
