Vero Beach,
an affluent stretch of Atlantic coastline, has just been listed for $27 million.

The 3.2-acre property on Florida’s Treasure Coast includes 316 feet along the ocean and spans three neighboring lots, said Danette Dieffenbach of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty, who listed them as one offering last week.

“I had come up with the idea of the three neighbors selling their properties together, and then the middle property came on the market, and my two sellers bought it,”Dieffenbach said. “It’s one of the largest oceanfront properties in the exclusive estate section of Indian River County, but it’s not the most expensive listing—there’s another on the market now for $60 million.”

The 6,400-square-foot main residence is owned by Miles Conway, a retired management consultant and economist, and his wife, Jacqueline Conway, a retired marketing director, who according to property records, bought the vacant land in 1992.

“I’m a hands-on person, and I supervised the construction of the house, which is in a ‘Miami Vice’ style,” Miles Conway said. “With its shutter system, pilings and break-away walls, it has the qualities of a hurricane bunker—we have ridden out five hurricanes, and each has felt like a stormy breeze.”

He said they were attracted to Vero Beach because “it’s pristine, it’s unspoiled, and it’s remote.”

Sited on 1.7 acres, the sculptural white house has four bedrooms, three full baths, one half bath and 29-foot ceilings that expand the panoramic views of the ocean.

Set behind a gated and video-monitored entrance, the house, which is on over 155 feet of oceanfront, is approached via a private drive that’s lined with 22 palm trees. The grounds include a private 125-foot boardwalk that leads to an exclusive beach, a regulation-size tennis court, an Olympic-size heated lap pool and a 12-car garage that’s designed to house vintage and collectible vehicles.

A glass-enclosed tube-like elevator leads to the home’s three levels, which include a great room with a fireplace and a chef’s kitchen with double ovens and a breakfast nook.

One wing houses the primary suite; the other is an executive office suite, a flex room and a bath.

The second property, set on 79 feet of water frontage, has an 1,875-square-foot four-bedroom, three-bath beachfront house that was built in 1979 and remodeled in 2000. It is owned by Conway and Walter Forman, a Palm Beach radiologist.

The third property, owned by Forman, is a 960-square-foot cottage. It has two bedrooms and two baths.

Dieffenbach said the property offers a lot of possibilities. “There are also two functional beach houses on the property that could be torn down and a larger house built in their place,” she said. “Or the buyer could knock down all three of the houses and either build a large single-family house or even a small development.”

The Conways, who are both 66, are relocating to Sardinia, Italy, and Mallorca, Spain, places they recently visited and fell in love with.

“We are highly active sports people,” he said. “I recently began cycling—it’s a challenge. I’ve been covering 11,000 miles a year up the coast of Florida, but it becomes boring seeing the same scenery.”

He noted that Sardinia and Mallorca, where the Tour de France entrants train, “is the holy grail for cyclists,” and “we’re looking forward to our new European adventure.”

Forman could not immediately be reached for comment.
