Messi returns to Inter Miami’s starting lineup, but Charlotte FC win and qualify for MLS Playoffs
Lionel Messi was back in the starting lineup for Inter Miami on Saturday against Charlotte FC for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in late September.
Messi had made his MLS return on October 7 against FC Cincinnati, but only played 35 minutes. Despite his return, Inter Miami were unable to put together a winning performance. Instead, Charlotte took the points and qualified for the MLS Playoffs, where they will be the 8th seed.

Kerwin Vargas opened the scoring for Charlotte in the 13th minute, erupting the crowd at Bank of America Stadium.
Messi was very close to an equalizing goal in the 62nd minute, when a free-kick of his from just outside the left side of the box took a slight deflection and was saved by Charlotte GK Kristijan Kahlina.
Miami controlled the tempo of the game for most of the second half, but couldn’t find a way through as Charlotte held on for what was a must-win match. Kahlina made several outstanding saves in the final minutes.
Michael Bradley honored in final match
Elsewhere in MLS, across the border, Michael Bradley played the final game of his career. The acclaimed midfielder announced his retirement mid-week. Toronto FC made sure to pay tribute before their game.
The New York Red Bulls grabbed the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs that was up for grabs.
