Jimmy Fallon jokes about Valerie, Vietnamese Miami University student
A college student’s TikTok video about mistaking Miami University for University of Miami was the subject of a joke Friday night during Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” monologue.
Valerie Do, an international student from Vietnam, joked that she looked forward to spending time at the beach, when she applied in 2021 to MU’s Oxford campus, thinking she was applying to study at the school in Coral Gables, Florida.
In a follow-up video, Do answered questions about the mistake she made and said she followed through with the decision to attend MU because of the financial aid she received, the fact that she feels safe on campus and the reputation of the business school.
As a campus tour guide at MU, she jokes about the mix-up and acknowledges that she’s happy in Ohio, even if the campus is not near the ocean.
“This is going viral. An international student was applying for colleges in the U.S. and wanted to go to the University of Miami to be near the beach,” Fallon joked in the monologue. “But she accidentally enrolled at Miami, Ohio. Yep. She also meant to apply to Brown, but now she has a job at UPS.”
The first video got more than 1.5 million views. Do sits at her laptop and moves to “I’m Already There” by Lonestar. Accompanying text reads, “When someone says ‘go to hell’ but I am studying abroad at Miami University of Ohio. I thought it was Miami Florida and did not realize. There are no beaches here it’s just corn field and in the middle of nowhere.”
Do said the video was just a “silly, funny TikTok” that she made to make people laugh, per Insider.com’s Aimee Pearcy. “I really love my school, and I have a good time here. It was a great mistake to make.”
In April, CBS college basketball analyst Clark Kellogg mistakenly congratulated Miami University on a Final Four appearance by the Hurricanes.
In September, the RedHawks and Hurricanes played in Coral Gables in the first college football meeting between the schools since 1987, with the ‘Canes winning 38-3.
