Who starts for the Miami Heat? And more big questions after training camp

BOCA RATON — The Miami Heat wrapped training camp at FAU this weekend and will now prepare to host the Hornets in their first preseason game on Tuesday, but there are still many unanswered questions about the team. The five-game preseason slate will offer the Heat a chance to examine the team against competition and answer those still-lingering questions. These are the most pressing.

1. Who gets the final roster spot?

The Heat have 13 players on standard contracts. They need to add a 14th by the start of the season. The Heat will give consideration to in-house candidates such as Jamal Cain and Dru Smith — both currently on two-way contracts — and other training camp invites.

Smith impressed coaches with a strong camp and got reps at point guard during scrimmages. He fills the roster’s most glaring need for ball-handling depth. Cain, like Smith, has been in the team’s development program for a while and could be ready to step up. R.J. Hampton, who the Heat signed to a two-way contract days before training camp, has also turned heads with his his athleticism. But with Caleb Martin, Haywood Highsmith and Jaime Jaquez Jr. already on the roster, there may not be a need to add to the wing rotation.

A dark horse: Cole Swider. Erik Spoelstra and Bam Adebayo both pointed to him as a camp standout and, with Max Strus and Gabe Vincent gone, there’s a need for shooting beyond Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson. If the Heat don’t think Swider is ready for the 15-man roster, they could promote one of their current two-way players and move Swider into a two-way spot.

If after training camp the Heat decide they need outside help, available free agents include Austin Rivers, Terrence Ross, Javonte Green, Terence Davis, Will Barton, Anthony Lamb, T.J. Warren, JaMychal Green and Meyers Leonard, among others.
