Swish plans for Baz Luhrmann’s Gold Coast beach shack rental
Australian director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, arrive for the 2023 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Plans to redevelop the site of a 1960s beach shack rented by film director Baz Luhrmann have been revealed as the Miami property goes under the hammer this month.
A new owner could either stay on as landlord to the acclaimed Aussie movie maker, or seek council approval for the proposed five-storey apartment building on the 405 sqm site.
The renovated cottage at 120 Marine Pde is marketed for auction on September 29 by Amir Prestige agents, Ben Ada and Cameron Edwards, with principal Amir Mian.
It is rented until March 2024 for $3,800 a week — or $198,000 annually — to Elvis director Luhrmann’s production company.

Owner Surjit Singh, who purchased the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house for $3.9m in December 2020, said Luhrmann had indicated a desire to renew the lease for another 12 months.
But Mr Singh engaged Costa Vorkas of Brisbane firm VArchitecture to design a boutique development comprising three spacious four-bedroom units and a two-storey penthouse with a pool and rooftop entertaining space.
“We wanted to design something which was very coastal and timeless and really captured as much of that view as you could along that beachfront strip,” Mr Singh said.
“The penthouse apartment will have a rooftop pool, so you could be sitting in your private swimming pool having a martini and looking north over Hedges Ave and to the Surfers Paradise skyline and beyond.”

Mr Singh said the plans could be passed to a new owner, as he was focused on an opportunity to take on an overseas project.
Mr Ada said the house was one of the last remaining beach shacks on Marine Pde, and had been upgraded with a new kitchen and bathrooms.
“Perched across from the beach, this house it not just a home, it’s an investment opportunity that dreams are made of.”

The raised house was built by the family of Wallabies great Andrew Slack in 1960.
Aussie industry legend Luhrmann set up post-production studios for his company, Bazmark, in a highway building in Miami during filming of his popular biopic of Elvis Presley in 2021.
While the temporary headquarters was demolished last year, Luhrmann has remained an advocate of the city he nicknamed ‘Goldiewood’, and retained the lease on the Marine Pde shack through his company.
