Why does Inter Miami’s Leonardo Campana have a bigger personal fortune than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

There may be other reasons as to why Inter Miami forward Leonardo Campana is envious of teammate Lionel Messi, but money isn’t one of them. The Ecuadorian attacker, who first joined The Herons on loan from Premier League club Wolves in 2022, has a personal fortune bigger than both the Argentina captain and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the greatest players in the history of soccer.

Believing Messi to be the wealthiest of member of the Inter Miami roster is totally logical, but that tag actually belongs to Campana. Not that the 23-year-old’s playing career has had much to do with it.

Leonardo Campana’s family background

According to a feature run by Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, several of Campana’s family members either were or are successful business people, including his father Pablo, a former tennis player who competed at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He later became Ecuador’s Foreign Trade and Investment Minister and now runs a real estate development company.

Isidro Campana, Leonardo’s grandfather, was the president of Ecuadorian soccer team Barcelona Sporting Club for 15 years and played a key role in the construction of their current stadium in Guayaquil, Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo (also known as Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha).

Campana’s uncle could become Ecuador’s next president

Two of his uncles have also done rather well for themselves, to put it mildly. Daniel Noboa in the running to become the next president of Ecuador (a run-off election will be held in October), while Álvaro Campana is a business tycoon known across the whole of Latin America.

In addition, his grandmother, Isabel Noboa, is one of the most prominent women entrepreneurs in Latin America, having been involved in successful real estate, tourism, commercial, agricultural and industrial businesses.

Money, it seems, runs in the family.

How does Campana’s personal fortune compare to Messi and Ronaldo’s?

Corriere dello Sport claim the Inter Miami forward has a personal fortune of around $1.08 billion, which is comfortably more than Messi (around $540 million) and Ronaldo (circa $500 million).

Campana has been in and out of The Herons’ starting line-up this season and has mostly been used as a substitute by Gerardo “Tata” Martino, although he did feature in all seven matches as the Florida side won the Leagues Cup, their first ever trophy.
