Every Miami player to wear No. 12

The Miami Dolphins will open their 2023 campaign against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 10, which is now 12 days away.

Until the opening kickoff of the season, we’ll be counting down each day by remembering the players who have worn each specific jersey number.

Today, we’re going to be doing things a little differently because there has only ever been one player to don No. 12 for Miami in their history, and he last did so in 1980.

The Dolphins drafted quarterback Bob Griese with the fourth overall pick in the 1967 NFL draft, and he made an immediate impact in South Florida, making the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons.

Griese started 151 games for the Dolphins over 14 seasons, throwing for 25,092 yards and 192 touchdowns. Prior to Dan Marino’s remarkable career, Griese was the franchise leader in both of those statistics, and he remains second in team history today, over 40 years after he last took a snap in aqua and orange.

The former Purdue Boilermaker was a six-time Pro Bowler, two-time AFL All-Star and two-time First-team All-Pro.

On top of Griese’s personal accolades, he also helped the Dolphins on their way to back-to-back Super Bowls in 1972-73 and 1974-74.

Following his playing career, Griese joined the media, spending time With NBC Sports, ABC Sports and ESPN. He also had the opportunity to watch his son, Brian, play in the NFL, including a brief stint with Miami.
