American rap legend DMC bizarrely claimed he is set to run for President before Lionel Messi’s potential MLS debut at the Red Bull Arena.
Messi was named on the bench for Inter Miami’s game against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, despite some fans forking out over $20,000 on tickets in anticipation of his league debut.
Since moving to the States last month, the Barcelona legend has only featured in cup competitions so far, helping Inter win last weekend’s Leagues Cup final and reach the US Open Cup final.
His long-awaited MLS bow may well come from the bench in New York, yet Messi’s demotion has done little to dampen the spirits of DMC, who is in attendance at the Red Bull Arena.
Prior to the game DMC, real name Darryl McDaniels, said in an interview with Apple TV that he is set to run for Presidency in an unexpected outburst before kick off.
He first joked: ‘It’s gonna get a little Messi in here!’
McDaniels then continued: ‘The whole beauty of everything that’s going on, Messi being here, soccer, MLS, everything that’s going on, this is what the world is all about.
‘We see so much division but if we go to a soccer game or concert or museum, where the sports and art is, it’s a true representation of how great this world is. Not can be, is.
‘And I am running for President starting today, because in a beautiful, place like this… what better place to announce it?
‘But it’s all about togetherness and people coming together.’
McDaniels is widely considered as one of the pioneers of the hip hop scene after founding the legendary New York group Run-DMC.
