645 area code to begin in Miami-Dade, Florida Keys

Beginning Friday, Aug. 4, telephone customers in the 305/786 area code region who request new phone numbers may be assigned the 645 area code.

Approved by the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) in 2022, the 645 area code overlay will co-exist with the 305 and 786 area codes in Miami-Dade County and Florida Keys.

“While minimizing the impact to current customers, the commission must plan for the continuing influx of new residents and businesses to the region — a testament to South Florida’s growing economy,” said PSC chair Andrew Giles Fay. “The new 645 area code will ensure that customer demand for new lines is met.”

Existing customers will keep their current telephone numbers, but new customers, or requests for additional lines, may be assigned the new area code. Everyone will continue to dial the area code plus the seven-digit phone number to make local calls (10-digit dialing).

Important information about the 645 area code implementation:

• Customers’ telephone numbers, including current area code, will not change.

• The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change.

• A local call will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.

• Customers can still dial just three digits to reach 911, as well as 211, 311, 411, 522, 611, 711, or 811 if they are currently available in their community.

• When providing telephone numbers, use the 10-digit number including the area code.

• Ensure that all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment recognize the new 645 area code as a valid area code.
