Revolution falters on the road in Miami, 2-1 for second-straight defeat
New England Revolution suffered its second straight defeat on Saturday, falling to Inter Miami, 2-1.
The host came out strong, scoring in the sixth minute off a long-range effort from David Ruiz. The left-footed attempt came from just outside the box and initially looked simple for the keeper, but the ball took an unfortunate deflection off Dave Romney in the box and left the Revolution’s keeper Đorđe Petrović completely wrong-footed.
The Revs thought they had the equalizer off a curling left-footed strike from Noel Buck after a dazzling cut inside from the right flank, but the goal was given offside by VAR review afterward, as Latif Blessing was deemed to be in an offside position during Buck’s shot attempt and obstructing Inter Miami keeper Drake Callender’s view
Carlos Gil ultimately did equalize for the Revs in the 26th minute with a right-footed shot at the end of an aggressive, direct run through the middle of the box.
But a gut-punch goal from Josef Martinez to end the first half proved too much to overcome.
Tried as they did in the second half, the Revs could not muster many clear-cut opportunities. The best chance came to Jozy Altidore in the 94th minute, who found himself one-on-one with the keeper deep inside the box. But Callender did well to make himself big and saved Altidore’s shot and the win for the hosts.
New England (7-2-3) will look to bounce back when it heads to Subaru Park to face the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m.
