Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits Heir Buys Miami Beach Home
Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits heir Mark Chaplin bought a non-waterfront La Gorce Island home in Miami Beach for $8 million.
Records show Chaplin bought a house on La Gorce Circle from Alan Scott Dansky and John H. Dawson.
Danksy is a surgeon and urologist affiliated with Coral Gables Hospital. The couple listed a mailing address in Atlanta on the deed.
Dina Goldentayer of Douglas Elliman had the listing, and Tyler Jove of Compass brought the buyer.
Chaplin is East region commercial strategy manager for his family’s Miami-based liquor distribution business, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits. His grandfather, Harvey Chaplin, founded the company in 1968, and his father, Wayne Chaplin, joined the business in 1984 and took over as CEO in 2014. The Chaplin family is the namesake for Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management.
Mark Chaplin works alongside his two siblings at Southern Glazer’s –– David Chaplin is chief growth officer, and Jennifer Chaplin is vice president.
Records show a trust in Wayne Chaplin’s name gave Mark Chaplin at $8 million loan to finance the La Gorce Island purchase.
Dansky and Dawson bought the house for $3.7 million in 2016, according to property records. Built in 1939 on 0.3 acres, the 4,300-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bathroom home includes a pool and Jacuzzi, records and the listing show.
The couple first listed the house for $8.9 million in March, Redfin shows.
Mark Chaplin’s new home is just down the street from his parents’ waterfront La Gorce Island mansion on La Gorce Circle. Built in 1950, Wayne and Arlene Chaplin’s 9,100-square-foot house has seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms and one half-bathroom, records show. The booze boss bought the 1.3-acre estate for $2.5 million in 1993. It includes a pool, tennis court, and dock, records show.
The pandemic-fueled real estate boom sent prices skyrocketing in Miami Beach’s coveted island neighborhoods. Developer Todd Glaser and his partners bought a non-waterfront teardown on La Gorce Island for $8.3 million in August. Matthew Bires, co-founder of film studio A24, bought a pair of non-waterfront homes on the island for $15.9 million in June.
Last May, a waterfront compound on the island belonging to the late Dr. M. Lee Pearce hit the market for $170 million. The asking price has now dropped to $140 million, according to Coldwell Banker Realty’s website.
