BU Prepped to Face No. 14 Miami in NCAA First Round


BOSTON – Set to make its 19th NCAA tournament appearance and first since 2021, the Patriot League champion Boston University women’s tennis team will face No. 14-seeded and host Miami in the first round of the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m.
 
This will be the fourth postseason meeting between the Terriers (19-4) and the Hurricanes (15-7). Miami has staved off BU in all three previous first round matches in a 4-0 decision. The teams have not met in the postseason since 2014. 
 
Before the Terriers take the court, No. 18 Auburn and No. 36 FIU will compete in the other first round match which will begin at 10 a.m. The winners of both matches on Friday will compete Saturday in the second round of the tournament for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16.
 
TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU is fresh off winning its sixth Patriot League and 28th conference title with a 5-0 win over Army West Point.
  • The Terriers blanked three opponents in the Patriot League Tournament on its way to winning the title.
  • Both sophomore Michelle Kleynerman and junior Victoria Carlsten finished their singles matches at the same time, resulting in a double clinch for the title.
  • Leading the Terriers in singles is junior Kaitlin Tan who boasts a 19-3 dual match singles record with a 17-0 record from the No. 4 spot. She is currently on a nine-match win streak.
  • Right behind is Carlsten who has an 18-4 dual match singles record. Also on a nine-match win streak, she is 13-3 from the No. 3 spot.
  • Grad student Shelly Yaloz has a 15-5 record at line one in dual contests and has one ranked win over the then-No. 65 singles player earlier this season.
  • Kleynerman is on a six-match win streak and boasts a 12-4 dual match record in singles.
  • Freshman Navya Vadlamudi is 7-1 in singles from line five, most recently winning in the PL Tournament against Bucknell.
  • Thanks to clinching the point against Lafayette in the PL Tournament, freshman Emily Zhao is 4-0 in the No. 6 spot and is on a seven-match win streak.
  • Tan and senior Erica Di Battista are 6-5 from the top doubles spot and are on a three-match win streak.
  • Yaloz and Kleynerman lead the Terriers in doubles with a 13-1 dual match record and own 11 wins in the No. 2 spot. The pair clinched the doubles point all three times in the PL Tournament.
  • Carlsten and Zhao have only dropped one match as a pair in the dual season, going 8-1 at line three.

 
SCOUTING MIAMI

  • Miami is 15-7 on the season and boasts 11 wins over ranked opponents.
  • The Hurricanes are currently ranked No. 15 in the most recent ITA National Rankings.
  • Miami has singles rankings in No. 5 Alexa Noel, No. 88 Isabella Pfenning and No. 105 Daevenia Achong as well as doubles rankings in No. 28 Noel/Achong, No. 32 Noel/Pfenning and No. 51 Achong/Maya Tahan.
  • In its most recent match, Miami dropped a 4-3 contest against Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals.
  • The Hurricanes have lost back-to-back matches only once this season when they fell to then-No. 8 Duke (4-3) and then-No. 1 North Carolina (5-2).
  • Friday marks Miami’s 27th-straight and 37th overall NCAA appearance.
  • The Hurricanes are 27-1 at home in NCAA contests and have made the second round in each of their last 20 appearances.
  • The nine members of the Hurricanes roster are led by head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews who is in her 22nd year.
