The University of Miami Health System is at work on a 363,000-square-foot facility in North Miami that would offer an extensive list of medical specialties and is to hire over 450 new staff, including physicians, nurses, technicians, and support.
UHealth, which is powered by the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at UM, broke ground last September on this new medical center, to be open in 2025, at SoLé Mia, a 184-acre mixed-use development in North Miami built by a joint venture between real estate developer LeFrak and design, development, and real estate management company Turnberry.
The new UHealth facility is to be a seven-story building, sitting on nearly 10 acres at 2111 SoLé Mia, “with an open green space, a reflection garden and views of the ocean and lagoons for those receiving extended services,” according to the UHealth website.
Care offered would include services from the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, as well as other specialties including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and hepatology, interventional radiology, oncology, neurology, neurological surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics and orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical and rehabilitation medicine, pulmonology, rheumatology, primary care, and others.
The center will also have UHealth’s flagship women’s health services, including obstetrics and gynecology, said Dr. Roy Weiss, chief medical officer for ambulatory services at the University of Miami Health System.
A six-level parking garage is also in the works to be adjacent to the facility, accessed from Biscayne Boulevard.
“We’re really excited about this,” said Dr. Weiss. “This is going to be the largest, most patient-friendly, high-quality, all-encompassing healthcare center for ambulatory medicine and wellness in South Florida.”
Construction for the structural frame started in April. When completed, Dr. Weiss said, it would be the largest outpatient medical facility of UHealth, with over 110 examination rooms, 10 operating rooms, 33 cancer treatment rooms, gastroenterology procedure rooms, and multiple ancillary imagining services that will support the specialties housed there.
In the next couple of months, Dr. Weiss added, “we will be hiring over 100 different providers, including physicians and advance practice nurses in all subspecialties.”
UHealth will also hire 350 new staff members, he said, including nurses, technicians, and other technical and operational support staff.
“Over 450 new positions will be created just for this building alone,” said Dr. Weiss. “We are really excited about being able to offer this in North Miami, Aventura, and the surrounding areas, as the only research-based academic medical system focused on healing, wellness, and prevention.”
