FSU is ‘up there’ for Miami defender Jeremiah Marcelin

TALLAHASSEE – Three-star defender Jeremiah Marcelin was in Tallahassee for a Florida State camp this past summer, but he was working that day. So Saturday’s experience at Junior Day was important for Marcelin as he got a chance to see the campus and spend extra time with FSU’s coaching staff.

“Actually seeing this campus, just seeing the different layout, how Tallahassee looks, it was real nice,” said Marcelin, who noted that the chilly weather in north Florida was a refreshing departure from the Miami heat that he’s accustomed to. “Sometimes, being different is good.”

Marcelin is one of the better edge defenders in the country after recording 18 sacks over the past two seasons at Miami Norland. But the primary recruiter for Marcelin, Randy Shannon, is recruiting Marcelin as a linebacker. That makes sense given Marcelin’s size (6-2, 200) and it could be a good fit for FSU given that Shannon is the linebackers coach as well as a former standout himself at Norland.

Kind of likes to break you in a little bit before you start having fun,” Marcelin said of Shannon. “He’s shown me that he really wants me. He came from Norland. He has a lot of ties to my school, my coaches, so I know I’d be in good hands if I go to him.”

Marcelin noted that FSU views him as a versatile linebacker capable of playing inside, outside or near the line of scrimmage in the Sam role.

As for where FSU stands for Marcelin – who also has offers from Auburn, Kentucky, and others – the Seminoles seem to be in a good place. He said FSU is among the schools currently standing out for him, joining Auburn, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, and Miami.

“They up there. They up there. They’ve been up there,” Marcelin said. “Coach Shannon is a real good guy. But, I mean taking visits like this solidifies this.”

Marcelin was businesslike in how he explained his recruiting process, and said FSU handled recruiting in a similar fashion. He doesn’t intend to do top lists or anything of the sort.

“When the time comes, everybody is going to know where I go,” Marcelin said.
