Miami signees and targets check into the Under Armour All-American game
ORLANDO, Fla. – For the next seven days, more than 100 of the top high school football talents will be in The City Beautiful in preparation for the Under Armour All-American Game on Jan. 3 and 247Sports and InsideTheU will be on hand with wall-to-wall coverage of the week. The action kicks off on Thursday with a Media Day event that will run from 10:30 a.m. ET until 5:00 p.m. ET.
Multiple Miami signees are set to attend but three will not be participating in the weeks action with defensive lineman Collins Acheampong, offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa, and tight end Riley Williams sidelined for undisclosed reasons. Acheampong did miss time as a senior with a leg injury.
Otherwise, the groups will be broken up into two teams; Team Phantom and Team Speed. All of Miami’s signees will be represented on the same team with EDGE Rueben Bain, offensive cornerback Robert Stafford, representing the Hurricanes on Team Speed.
Five-star cornerback Cormani McClain, who is the highest-ranked non-signee at the event, remains committed to the Hurricanes and will serve as a captain for Team Speed where he will be rostered with a few of his potential future teammates, who will likely be doing a lot of recruiting to keep the nation’s top defensive back in the fold with Alabama and potentially Colorado pushing. McClain’s recruitment will likely be the recruiting storyline of the event – and he did show up to the team hotel wearing Miami gear on Wednesday afternoon.
But there will also be a top Miami target in attendance and that’s Washington (DC) Archbishop Carroll five-star athlete Nyckoles Harbor. Maybe the best overall athlete the recruiting industry has seen, Harbor, who is listed as a tight end of Team Phantom’s roster, is being recruited to catch passes on the offensive side of the ball by some and to get after the quarterback as a pass rusher by others. It sounds like Harbor would prefer to stay on the offensive side of the ball so that he can remain leaner for track, which he intends to run collegiately and potentially olympically.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder has gone as fast as 10.28 in the 100-meter and 20.78 in the 200-meter, making him a physical anomaly that schools like Michigan, South Carolina, and Maryland are in play for.
People familiar with the recruitment indicate that the Hurricanes are still very much alive with over a month to go until the traditional Signing Day coming in February.
If McClain trends away from Miami in the coming weeks, there is an unsigned cornerback who the Hurricanes have communicated with in the past and that’s Gardena (Cali.) Junipero Serra’s Rodrick Pleasant. Rostered by Team Phantom, Pleasant had the fastest 100-meter and 200-meter time in the country this spring with a wind-legal 10.14 and 20.40, respectively.
Stay locked in to InsideTheU for Under Armour All-American Game coverage over the next week as we report live from Orlando.
