• MSU tangles with Miami for the second straight season after a seven-year hiatus in the series. The former CCHA-mates played last October in East Lansing, with the Spartans earning a 3-1, 2-1 sweep. The all-time series tips in favor of Michigan State, which leads 71-34-6. The Spartans own a 29-16-3 mark in Oxford. Miami assistant coach Zach Cisek is a Spartan alumnus and was a goaltender for MSU from 2013-15. He is in his first season at Miami after previously coaching at Lake Superior State, where he coached MSU captain Miroslav Mucha (2019-22).
• MSU averages 3.5 goals per game and has 49 scores through 14 games. The Spartans tallied 76 goals in 36 games a year ago, and scored 80 goals in 36 games in the final full pre-Covid season (2019-20). MSU is on pace to score 126 goals on the season – and MSU has not had 100 or more goals in a season since 2011-12. Sixteen different players have scored MSU’s 49 goals, with 13 having at least two scores. A total of 20 skaters have at least one point on the year.
• Karsen Dorwart has been named the Big Ten’s Second Star of the Week, as announced by the Conference office on Tuesday. Dorwart had a pair of goals and two assists in MSU’s split at No. 6 Penn State last weekend. Dorwart had an assist in Friday’s game, and then recorded his first multiple-goal game on Saturday. Dorwart is the fifth different MSU player to earn Big Ten Star honors this season, the most individuals honored in a single season for Michigan State since the 2015-16 season. He centers MSU’s top line and is the team’s second-leading point scorer with a 4-10-14 scoring line. He is ninth in the Big Ten in points, sixth in assists, and also ranks sixth with a +11 rating.
• Freshman Daniel Russell remains Michigan State’s leading scorer with 16 points (5-11-16) and is also the team’s assist leader. He ranks third in the Big Ten in both categories. He ranks 23rd nationally in assists per game (0.79).
• Cole Krygier had a goal and an assist in the PSU series and tied for the team lead with a +4. He owns a 3-2-5 scoring line on the year with nine blocked shots. He recorded a goal and an assist, two blocked shots, and a team-best plus-four rating in the Penn State series.
• Dylan St. Cyr made 63 saves in the split at No. 6/6 Penn State. He stopped 33 the first night and 30 in the win on Saturday. St. Cyr has played in 13 of MSU’s 14 games this season (and all eight Big Ten contests). He leads the Big Ten with a .930 save percentage overall (ninth nationally), and is third in the Conference with a 2.23 GAA. He owns the second-most victories of any B1G netminder (8).
