Miami Beach Celebrates 20 Years of Art Basel

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Art Basel Miami Beach, the centerpiece of the city’s widely acclaimed Art Week Miami Beach, which brings together thousands of collectors, galleries and artists from across the globe amid a celebrity-studded atmosphere and dozens of glamorous events.
Art Week Miami Beach 2022 runs from Monday, Nov. 28 to Sunday, Dec. 4 as the city once again welcomes the art world to its 7 miles of pristine beaches, chic hotels and upscale dining scene.
“Art Week Miami Beach is the Super Bowl of the art world,” shared Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “We are proud and excited to once again host this incredible gathering of top contemporary artists, galleries and collectors in America’s year-round arts and culture destination by the sea.”
This year’s Art Week Miami Beach will feature the largest installment yet of Art Basel Miami Beach (Dec. 1-3) with 282 exhibitors from 38 countries and territories. In addition to its Galleries, Positions, Nova, Survey and Edition sectors, the fair will host 20 large-scale projects as part of the Meridians sector, 29 curated installations within exhibitors’ booths in the Kabinett sector as well as nine panels with leading art world voices in its Conversations series at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Art Basel, Miami Beach residents will be eligible to purchase half-price show tickets during a two-day promotion ahead of the event on Nov. 20-21 here. Purchasers will be asked to provide proof of residence at the time of purchase.
The City of Miami Beach will also curate its own special programming and exhibitions during Art Week Miami Beach, including temporary and permanent works being installed in Pride Park near the Miami Beach Convention Center, above tourist-favorite Española Way and in Henry Liebman Square along the 41 Street Corridor.
Elevate Española, a new dedicated art presentation site featuring aerial installations on Española Way, will debut on Monday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. with an installation entitled Trapeze Contortionists by Haitian-born, local artist Edouard Duval-Carrié to mark the kickoff of Art Week Miami Beach. The work features the silhouettes of 15 dancers cut from lightweight aluminum. Elevate Española is a new city initiative to enhance the corridor and encourage pedestrian connectivity to Ocean Drive.
Later, at 5 p.m. that same day, the city will welcome visitors to Starchild, a 50-foot figurative sculpture by artist duo FriendsWithYou at the corner of Pine Tree Drive and 41 Street along the 41 Street Corridor. Starchild is the main character in FriendsWithYou’s newest body of work, a longform conceptual project in which the artists are renaming the Earth to “Ocean” as a means to unify the planet by a name. This artwork was funded by the Miami Beach OnStage! program.
At 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, the city will dedicate the monumental public artwork Minna by Jaume Plensa in Pride Park, which was gifted to the city by philanthropist Norman Braman, who was also one of the visionaries who helped bring Art Basel to Miami Beach two decades ago.
Other highlights of Art Week Miami Beach include the third edition of the city-produced and curated No Vacancy, Miami Beach, which will match 12 artists with 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels. Funded in partnership with the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, this year offers an expanded art competition that features $35,000 in prize money, including a $10,000 public prize by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and a $25,000 juried prize to be decided by local art experts. Each artist will also receive a $10,000 stipend. The installations will be available for viewing between Nov. 17 and Dec. 8.
The popular Art Basel Legacy Purchase Program will return for its fourth year with previously acquired works by artists Sanford Biggers, Amoako Boafo, Ebony G. Patterson and Farah Al Qasimi on behalf of the residents of Miami Beach.
GETTING AROUND
With large numbers of visitors expected to attend Art Week Miami Beach 2022, the city encourages eventgoers to take advantage of the free citywide Miami Beach Trolley, public transit, ride-sharing options, water transportation from Downtown Miami to South Beach via the Poseidon Ferry and the recently completed Beachwalk that spans the entire 7-mile length of the city’s oceanfront for those that prefer to bike or walk.
Biking and micro-mobility enthusiasts will also find miles of green bike lanes and convenient bicycle parking throughout Miami Beach. View the city’s bicycle parking maps for more information. Additionally, Citi Bike offers more than a thousand bicycles, including electric-assisted bikes, at conveniently located bicycle sharing stations throughout the city.
Miami-Dade Transit offers Metrobus service to and from the mainland while the closest ride-sharing location to the Miami Beach Convention Center will be on the north side of 18 Street between Convention Center Drive and Meridian Court.
The citywide trolley service will place additional vehicles into service on all trolley routes from Wednesday, Nov. 30 through Sunday, Dec. 4 from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. to reduce average passenger wait times to approximately every 10 minutes during the enhanced service times. PEAK TRAVEL TIMES
The heaviest periods of traffic congestion during Art Week Miami Beach are typically on weekday afternoons with congestion increasing closer to the weekend. Traffic congestion leaving Miami Beach can be exacerbated by incidents on major thoroughfares outside of the city, including I-395, I-195 and I-95. The Florida Department of Transportation’s ongoing road work and lane reductions near the Biscayne Boulevard off-ramp in Downtown Miami is expected to impede westbound traffic leaving Miami Beach along the MacArthur Causeway. A citywide construction moratorium will suspend all construction-related activities within the public right of way throughout the week — prohibiting road, sidewalk and lane closures. To reduce congestion along the Venetian Causeway connecting Downtown Miami and Miami Beach, the east Venetian Causeway bridge will be on lock-down and will not open to vessels from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. from November 29 to December 3, except emergency vessels and tug/tows.
The city plans to implement special event signal timing changes and other traffic mitigation measures along all major thoroughfares with an enhanced level of traffic monitoring for Art Week Miami Beach. This will include 14 hours of traffic monitoring each day and coordination with the Miami Beach Police Department to enforce traffic regulations at intersections while keeping motorists informed of delays through digital message signs. The city will proactively communicate with Waze, Google, and Inrix to accurately reflect all street closures on their respective mobile platforms in real-time.
In addition, the city will issue traffic text alerts as warranted to notify the public of major roadway incidents. Subscribe to receive traffic text message alerts by texting MBAlert to 888777. City staff will work closely with the FDOT SunGuide Traffic Management Center to program traffic messages on overhead digital message signs along I-95, SR 112/I-195 and SR 836/I-395 regarding any major incidents on Miami Beach causeways.

“Fragile Beauty” explores the powerful allure of nature alongside its delicate state today. Featuring site-specific installations by Beatriz Chachamovits, Mira Lehr and Lauren Shapiro, the exhibition brings together works by local Miami artists that reflect on climate change and human impact on our oceans, coral reefs and rapidly shifting environment. “Lady Liberty” will feature more than 20 works by Bonnie Lautenberg, spanning her artistic career, including photographs she took in Antarctica, Palm Beach, Cuba and New York alongside her conceptual artworks.
