Field Hockey Ends Successful Season With Loss to Miami At MAC Tourney
OXFORD, Ohio – The fourth-seeded Ball State field hockey team (7-12, 4-3 MAC) wrapped up its 2022 season with a 2-0 loss to top-seeded Miami (12-7, 6-1 MAC) Friday morning in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, on the campus of Miami University.
It was a defensive battle throughout the entire 60 minutes of action between these two rivals, where the Cardinals held the RedHawks scoreless up until the 28:38 mark of the second period of action. Ball State continued its stingy defense causing Miami fits offensively.
Junior goalie Hannah Johnston had some impressive scoring stops as she faced 20 shots and nine penalty corners while tallying 12 saves on the day.
Offensively the Cardinals struggled as the RedHawks focused defensively on Ball State’s leading scorer, Fleur Knopert. Ball State had some chances where they outpaced the RedHawks to their scoring zone, but struggled to capitalize on those opportunities.
The Cardinals entered the tournament on a high note with freshman Fleur Knopert earning First Team All-MAC honors yesterday, while also being selected to the All-MAC Freshman squad. Additionally, first-year head coach Caitlin Walsh guided Ball State to its first tournament appearance since 2019 and to one of its best seasons in over a decade.
