Big change coming to Miami’s skyline, with work underway on record-breaking tower

MIAMI – Miami’s skyline is set to look a whole lot different in the coming years, as developers officially broke ground on a record-breaking skyscraper Thursday.

Stretching 1,049 feet into the sky and 100 stories tall, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Residences, located at 300 Biscayne Blvd., is slated to become the Magic City’s—and Florida’s—tallest building.

That record is currently held by Brickell’s Panorama Tower, which stands at 868 feet tall.

“To say it’s complex and timely it’s an understatement,” Ryan Shear, managing partner with PMG, said. “It takes years just to design the foundation of this building.”

The building would be Florida’s first “supertall” skyscraper, a term used to describe skyscrapers more than 300 meters, or 984 feet, tall.

Waldorf Astoria is a name you might associate with the Big Apple. Consider this yet another New Yorker moving to the 305.

“Supertalls are common in New York. So to bring something to Miami that was to like plant the flag, to say we are a leading global city, we can also build súpertalls down here and bring a five-star brand and do it collectively with unique design,” Shear said. “If you’re gonna do it, you’ve got to do it properly and right.”

The building will resemble a stack of building blocks soaring into the sky.

Inside, there will be 360 private residences, 205 hotel rooms, a sky view pool with 360-degree views of the city—and so much more.

The project is set to be completed in 2027.
