The last time the Hokies emerged victorious was on Oct. 5, 2019 in Miami, as three first-quarter touchdowns helped Tech walk out of Hard Rock Stadium with the win. Tight end Dalton Keene hauled in five passes for 73 yards and a team-high three touchdown receptions. Defensively, cornerbacks Jermaine Waller and Caleb Farley each had two interceptions, with the Hokies forcing five Miami turnovers.
Since the two joined the ACC back in 2004, the series is currently tied at 8-8. For a closer look of the two’s history, read below for Tech’s Series Snapshot, presented by AAA.
Oct. 8, 2011 – Virginia Tech 38, Miami 35 (Blacksburg, Va.)
Tech won a back-and-forth affair that saw 35 fourth-quarter points scored. After quarterback Logan Thomas hit receiver Jarrett Boykin for a 60-yard touchdown pass to take a 31-21 lead, Miami clawed back and scored back-to-back touchdowns to take the lead, 35-31, with just under three minutes left. Thomas then went 3-for-3 passing for 31 yards and combined with running back David Wilson for 46 rushing yards, including Thomas’ go-ahead 19-yard touchdown run. But what was most memorable, however, was how the game finished. With five seconds remaining and the Hurricanes facing a fourth-and-10 on their own 45-yard line, Miami called a timeout. “Enter Sandman” was promptly played over the loudspeakers, sending Lane Stadium into a frenzy. When play resumed, the Hokies stopped the Hurricanes short of the first down and Tech won the game.

Dec. 4, 2004 – Virginia Tech 16, Miami 10 (Miami, Fla.)
In one of Tech’s most important wins at Miami, the No. 10 Hokies beat the No. 9 Hurricanes to clinch sole possession of the 2004 ACC Championship in their first year in the conference. With the teams tied at 10-10, Tech forced Miami to punt on its first possession of the fourth quarter. Receiver Eddie Royal returned the punt 18 yards to the Miami 39-yard line. On the very next play, quarterback Brian Randall hit Royal for a 39-yard touchdown to take a 16-10 lead with 11:29 remaining. Tech’s defense took over the rest of the game, forcing two punts and a turnover on downs, while allowing just two Miami first downs to claim the conference title outright.

Sept. 23, 1995 – Virginia Tech 13, Miami 7 (Blacksburg, Va.)
The Hokies upset the No. 17 Hurricanes in Lane Stadium behind a 166-yard rushing performance and a touchdown from running back Dwayne Thomas for Tech’s first-ever win over Miami. Current defensive line coach J.C. Price, who was one of Tech’s captains, recorded 11 tackles in the win, including four sacks for a total loss of 35 yards. Price’s four sacks are tied for the most in a single game in program history. Tech would go on to win the 1995 BIG EAST Championship.
