“Punishing” the Miami Marlins doesn’t work

Kim Ng made some questionable comments
I see tweets talking about “punishing” the Miami Marlins ownership (Bruce Sherman) for losing by not attending games. I even saw lifelong fans do this. The argument is that by not spending money on the team, it will force Sherman to spend money to improve the team to stop losing money from bad attendance. First of all, changes to improve The Fish are already under way. Second, there’s a plan that Bruce Sherman and Kim Ng can follow to build consistent winning teams… not attending games just won’t work.
Some fans want to “punish” the Miami Marlins by not attending games.
It’s OK to be frustrated by the Miami Marlins. We all are. The Fish were supposed to be playoff contenders this season, instead we’re just above the Washington Nationals and their “who are these guys?!” roster in last place in our division. Most fans don’t believe that Sherman and Kim Ng will turn out situation around. Kim might say that “failure is not an option for me”, but this season says otherwise.
The problem with not going to games is that it doesn’t bring us any closer to a World Series victory. It does the exact opposite actually, the less attendance the less revenue that Bruce Sherman makes from the Miami Marlins. The less revenue that he makes, the less incentive that he has to invest more in the team. Would you invest an extra $100 million in contracts on a team that barely makes you a profit?
Not going to Miami Marlins games also means that you miss out on an opportunity to sit close to the field at a very affordable price. You miss out on getting balls and seeing the players up close. The players aren’t responsible for Sherman’s actions and could use more support. It’s not their fault that the team isn’t acquiring enough stars.
I get being frustrated by how the Miami Marlins have been playing. I really do. If you want to punish Bruce Sherman and Kim Ng though, send e-mails to the team, bring signs to the games, make a hashtag trend…. Gaining the team even less revenue to spend on players when we want more spending is just silly and detrimental.
