NBA Star Hassan Whiteside Buys Miami Pied-a-Terre

Soon, NBA center Hassan Whiteside will be able to spread his 7-foot-7 wingspan in a new Miami pied-à-terre.

The 33-year-old just scored a corner-unit penthouse in The Standard Residences for $1.2 million.

“Everybody has said the same thing about the project. The price point that they came out of the gate with, I think, was very competitive for what they’re offering,” says Ryan Kelly with Douglas Elliman, who represented Whiteside in the transaction and has closed 14 deals at the building.

Whiteside bought Penthouse 27.

‘Best of the best’

“Like most, he likes the best of the best and he picked the best unit available in the entire building,” Kelly says. “He went with the largest penthouse possible with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, [and] 11-foot ceilings. It’s absolutely gorgeous.”

Construction is set to begin later this year or early next year on a 12-story building with 228 residences ranging in size from 432 to 965 square feet. Kelly says the penthouses like Whiteside’s are a bit bigger.

About 70% of the building is pre-sold and delivery is planned for the middle of 2024. Kelly says his sales have ranged from about $420,000 to this sale at $1.2 million, and prices are increasing since demand is high and supply is dwindling.

“The clients will have to furnish [their units] on their own, but they come finished, so everything besides your actual furniture and window treatments is going to be provided by the developer,” Kelly explains. “The owners can customize it to their liking.”

‘Perfect pied-à-terre’

The building will also feature 34,000 square feet of amenities, including a rooftop pool, a restaurant, a fitness center, social lounges, co-working spaces, and an indoor pickleball court.

Kelly says some owners are planning to live in their units full time. Others, like Whiteside, see an opportunity.

“A lot of the attraction was because these are investments, and the ability to rent [out] these units … is huge,” Kelly says.

In the 2010 NBA draft, Whiteside was a second-round pick out of Marshall by the Sacramento Kings. He has played for several teams both in the United States and abroad, including the Kings, the Miami Heat, Portland Trail Blazers, and most recently the Utah Jazz.

“The Standard is a pioneer in experiential hospitality with a one-of-a-kind vibe and style that resonates with me,” Whiteside says. “This property is a perfect pied-à-terre in an incredible location.”

Kelly says he is working with Whiteside on other deals in the South Florida area.

“I haven’t seen anyone like this guy. He’s got some big things in mind for his real estate portfolio.” Kelly says. I don’t know what his plans for his future in basketball are, but I do know he’s been spending a lot of time and attention on his portfolio here in Miami.”
