With just a few weeks left in Major League Soccer’s regular season, two clubs are hoping to establish themselves as certified playoff contenders, as the Columbus Crew get set to take on the Portland Timbers.

The Crew come into Sunday holding the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, sitting seventh, just one point ahead of Atlanta United, and two points in front of Inter Miami. However, a win on Sunday, could help them jump both Orlando City and Cincinnati FC for fifth in the conference. All of which are well behind fourth-place New York City FC, who hold 49 points. Columbus would certainly like a win, especially since they have not won since Aug. 31, going without a victory over their last three matches, including a 2-1 loss to Miami this past Tuesday.
The Timbers come into Columbus on a roll. They also have plenty of rest since their win over Minnesota United last Saturday, kind of stalling their three-game win streak. Each of those wins coming against playoff, or playoff-contending teams, as they have earned three points against the likes of Atlanta United and Austin FC. Portland’s run is a far cry from their five-match winless streak last month, as they are now sixth in the Western Conference two points ahead of Real Salt Lake, with the L.A. Galaxy, the first club outside of the playoff picture, having a five-point gap behind the Timbers.
