American Airlines requests DoT increased flights between Miami and Havana
American Airlines is petitioning the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) under DOT-OST-2016-0021-1430 for the earliest possible allocation of fourteen weekly flights on the Miami (MIA) – Havana (HAV) route, expanding its operation to eight daily flights.
In 2020 the Dallas-based company had requested to increase its operations between Florida and Cuba, but due to the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic it was forced to cancel these growth plans in the Cuban capital.
On January 16, 2020, JetBlue notified the DoT that it would return 14 weekly frequencies of its U.S.-Cuba flights, American is requesting to be allocated these frequencies to increase its operations on the Caribbean Island.
The airline has proposed two new services on the Miami (MIA) – Havana (HAV) route, one on the morning and one on the evening. These operations must begin within 90 days after the frequencies are assigned.

With these new operations, the airline expects to offer travelers better connections between the United States and Cuba, adding more capacity on the most in-demand route between the two nations, while improving American Airlines’ international connectivity.
The Dallas-based carrier recently obtained approval to resume services from Miami (MIA) to Camagüey (CMW), Holguín (HOG), Santa Clara (SNU), Santiago de Cuba (SCU) and Varadero (VRA).
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, American Airlines will have an offer of 29,078 seats per week in 168 operations for the 2022/2023 boreal winter season between the United States and Cuba, becoming the largest U.S. operator in this market.
