Here are the top stories today in Miami:

1. Miami-Dade police are investigating a shooting that left a child injured in Hialeah Saturday afternoon along west 49th street. Police said the girl was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital as a precaution and is expected to be okay. (WPLG local 10)

2. Governor Ron DeSantis attacked a photo circulating of what appeared to be an unguarded ballot box in Broward County and claimed an investigation will be launched by Florida’s new elections police unit. A representative for Broward Supervisor of Elections says the photo of the person monitoring the ballot box was actually cropped out of the photo that DeSantis attacked. (Florida Politics)

3. Miami Commissioner Ken Russell told The Daily Beast Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has the “ability to veto any actions by the city commission” in relation to the controversial plan to move the homeless in South Florida to Virginia Key island. One issue brought up by Miami-Dade Mayor Danielle Levine Cava is the safety issue if a hurricane were to hit the island. (The Daily Beast)

4. Shops at Merrick Park, one of Coral Gables’ destinations for fine shopping and dining has announced new retailers including Eden Park, Saya/Sitka Semsch, LensCrafters Specialty Optical and Eyewear and Sisu Clinic. Lafayette 148 and IMO are also opening soon. (Miami’s Community News)

5. A new report from The National Low Income Housing Coalition says residents would need to make $32.12 an hour to afford rent in Miami-Dade County at three times the rent. United Teachers of Dade president Karla Hernandez-Mats blames teacher shortages partially on the rising cost of living and says higher costs are driving away essential workers. The report also says workers will need more than one full-time job to keep up with rising costs. (WSVN)

  • Firefighters and police officers saved several animals from a burning apartment building in Little Havana on Saturday afternoon, according to Miami Fire Rescue. It happened at 711 Beacom Blvd. at around 4:20 p.m. (WPLG Local 10)
  • Three South Florida men who are suspected in at least five cargo thefts worth more than $1 million were caught in the act and jailed this past weekend, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. They are being held in Broward County Jail. (NBC Miami)
  • THE UNEMPLOYMENT CLUB opens at Tower Theater Miami this week. (Miami Film Festival via Facebook)
