Here are the top stories in Miami today:
1. The Florida Board of Medicine agreed in Fort Lauderdale on Friday to take a petition approved by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and filed by the Florida Department of Health that would ban gender-reassignment surgery for youth as well as hormone replacement therapy and various other medications. The LGBTQ community rallied in Dania Beach to protest the move. (WSVN)
2. A 40-year-old Summerland Key man who goes by the nickname “Redbeard” is facing charges after allegedly stealing his roommate’s eclectus parrot and leaving it injured at a bus stop, according to authorities. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to help pay for the vet care of the bird. (Miami Patch)
3. An planned Hyatt Regency redevelopment will make a $25 million contribution for affordable housing to Miami after talks between the city and developer. The city owns the property where the developer plans to build in downtown Miami. Voters will need to first vote in November for the measure for it go through. (Miami Today)
4. Protesters organized to block the Virginia Key homeless camp recently approved in Miami by commissioners after an initial failed vote. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a memo that the county “is now exploring to understand potential challenges with the site.” (WPLG Local 10)
5. Grove Bay Hospitality is partnering with a Michelin-starred Chef Jeremy Ford on a new restaurant opening this fall called Beauty and the Butcher.
