Miami Hurricanes DE Cyrus Moss named 2022 true freshman who matters

Miami Hurricanes freshman defensive end Cyrus Moss was named as one of “The 100 true freshmen who matter in 2022″ by Chris Hummer of 247 Sports. Moss was the highest-ranked 2022 Miami signee. Hummer expects Moss to break the rotation of Miami edge rushers in 2022.

It would be impressive for Moss to break through what has become a deep Miami Hurricanes group of edge rushers. Miami signed transfers Mitchell Agude from UCLA and Akheem Mesidor from West Virginia during the 2022 offseason. Agude and Mesidor are expected to be the 2022 starting DEs for Miami.

Miami also returns Jahfari Harvey and Chantz Williams who were part of the rotation of edge rushers in 2021 for the Hurricanes and are expected to be major contributors in 2022. Moss and Nyjalik Kelly who was another highly ranked 2022 edge rusher signee for Miami are the future at DE for the Hurricanes.

Moss had 111 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks as a senior at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas last season. Bishop Gorman is the same high school that produced Miami Hurricanes alums, safety Bubba Bolden, tight end Brevin Jordan and quarterback Tate Martell. Hummer profiled Moss.

“Moss flashed brightly in the Hurricanes’ spring game, leading the team with three sacks while also adding a forced fumble. That said, the 6-foot-6 Moss is just 220 pounds. He needs to get stronger. But what he does have is a rare blend of length and twitchiness for someone his size.

Moss isn’t going to start this year but should force his way into the rotation as a situational pass rusher.”

A 6’6, Moss could have a similar career track as former Miami star Greg Rousseau. Rousseau was often used as an inside pass rusher on third down that could disrupt the opposition with his length. Kelly and Moss have a good group of veterans to learn from in 2022. Adding Agude and Mesidor was critical.

With Agude, Harvey, Mesidor and Williams, Kelly and Moss will not have to be significant contributors as true freshmen. Rousseau had a breakout 2022 season with 54 tackles, 19.5 TFLs and 15.5 sacks. Agude had 55, 6.5, two and four forced fumbles for UCLA and Mesidor had 38, eight and 4.5 for West Virginia in 2021.

Moss was the eighth-ranked edge rusher and second-rated player from Nevada in the Class of 2022. Moss began his high school career as a safety. Blair Angulo of 247 Sports projects Moss as a future first-round pick. Jaelan Phillips and Rousseau were picked in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft from Miami.
