Miami Dade College President to Receive Education Fund’s Public School Alumni Achievement Award May 26
Miami, May 12, 2022 – Miami Dade College (MDC) President Madeline Pumariega will be honored with the Education Fund’s Public School Alumni Achievement Award at the “Love of Art Charity” Auction and Honoree Celebration at 8 p.m., Thursday, May 26, at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.
Breaking through barriers and making history, President Pumariega is the first female president to lead MDC. Her passion for innovation in higher education was born out of her own experiences, first as a student athlete and then as a longtime administrator at MDC. Prior to her appointment as president, she was executive vice president and provost at Tallahassee Community College. She also served as the first female and Hispanic Chancellor of the Florida College System, and was president of Take Stock in Children, a statewide nonprofit focused on breaking the poverty cycle through education. The Education Fund’s Charity Auction is a showcase comprised of more than 150 original art works created by students and teachers using “found” objects, as well as luxury items such as airline tickets, cruises, etc. The auction, with its live music and epicurean buffet, attracts more than 400 art collectors and patrons from the community. Funds raised at the event support arts education and a school supply warehouse where all Miami Dade County public school teachers and 55 non-profit partners can “shop” for free.
Each year during the auction, successful graduates of public schools are honored who are community and business leaders that have demonstrated that with a public-school education it is possible to achieve amazing success.
