MLS Notebook: Key moments from Week 10

MLS Week 10 is now history! Check out the best moments from the weekend’s slate of matches.

D.C.’s Taxi still delivering

The Greek international forward now has four goals and one assist in only four MLS matches since arriving from Rapid Vienna on a DP deal.

Sounders rotate after CCL title

Fresh off becoming MLS’s first-ever Concacaf Champions League winner, the Seattle Sounders made 10 changes to their starting XI that beat Liga MX’s Pumas midweek.

Nouhou was the only holdover for the 2-0 loss at FC Dallas, though the defender was an early injury sub in the CCL Final. Homegrown midfielder Obed Vargas also started after replacing Joao Paulo on the historic night at Lumen Field.

Erik Hurtado’s late equalizer ruins New England’s rally

New England were leading 2-1 late after goals from DeJuan Jones and Adam Buksa sparked a would-be comeback win over Columbus.

But then Crew striker Erik Hurtado ran past the Revolution backline to level the match in the 89th minute, resulting in split spoils at Gillette Stadium.

Jesus Ferreira passes his dad’s MLS scoring total

The USMNT and FC Dallas striker’s goal against Seattle was his seventh of the season and 25th MLS goal of his career, enough to pass his father, David Ferreira, whose career tally was 24 in six seasons (113 matches) with FCD.

Jesus is in his sixth season with FC Dallas and has played 90 league matches, surpassing his dad, the 2010 MLS MVP winner, in 23 fewer matches. He’s now 10th all-time on the Dallas scoring list.

LAFC, Philadelphia Union trade punches

The two MLS heavyweights were unable to deliver a knockout blow, finishing in a 2-2 thriller Saturday night. LAFC tallied two goals in the second half, fending off a first-half finish from Daniel Gazdag and a golazo from Julian Carranza in the 67th minute.

Both sides remain first in their respective conferences. Philadelphia sit one point ahead of the second-place Red Bulls with 19 points (5W-1L-4D) in the Eastern Conference, while LAFC control the West with 23 points (7W-1L-2D), which also tops the Supporters’ Shield standings.

San Jose on the rise?

There was little flashy about it, but San Jose secured a 1-0 win at home over Colorado thanks to Nathan’s 64th-minute finish.

They’ve now won three of four games across all competitions under interim boss Alex Covelo, who replaced the departed Matias Almeyda last month.

‘Caps snatch late, controversial win against Toronto

Week 10’s all-Canadian affair was marred by controversy as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Toronto FC 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, thanks to a late goal by Tosaint Ricketts.

Toronto thought they opened the score in the 66th minute when a rebound fell to Jayden Nelson, who went on to score. However, referee Victor Rivas called a foul after confirming via Video Review that the ball was in possession of Vancouver goalkeeper Thomas Hasal at the time Nelson kicked it.

Dave Romney’s winner secures first Nashville SC victory at GEODIS Park

The Nashville SC defender broke the deadlock against Real Salt Lake in the 63rd minute after finding a rebound inside the box. CJ Sapong added a second in stoppage time as the Coyotes secured a 2-0 win at GEODIS Park, the newest and largest soccer-specific stadium in the United States and Canada.

The result extended Nashville’s home unbeaten streak to 21 games, including 19 matches played at Nissan Stadium last season.
