Freedom To Choose Rally Planned Tuesday In Miami By Nikki Fried
MIAMI, FL — After a draft majority opinion indicating the U.S. Supreme Court plans to overturn Roe v. Wade was reportedly leaked to Politico, Nikki Fried, Florida’s agriculture commissioner, said she plans to host a Freedom to Choose rally in Miami Tuesday afternoon.
Fried is asking people to join her at Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Blvd., at 1:45 p.m.
“The news coming out of the Supreme Court last night is so disturbing and so dangerous. We can’t sit on the sidelines,” she said in a video she tweeted Tuesday morning, adding, “We will stand up for our rights to choose.”
“The women of our country are under direct attack by right-wing radicals,” Fried tweeted. “Overturning the freedom over our bodies is unconstitutional, unacceptable, and taking us back to a dark, dark time. If they can control our bodies, what do we have left? This cannot stand.”
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, Florida is likely to ban abortions, according to the Guttmacher Institute. In 2021, the state legislature attempted – but failed – to move forward strict abortion regulations, including a 20-week and a six-week abortion ban.
Last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Reducing Fetal and Infant Mortality Act into law. The 15-week abortion ban, which takes effect July 1, doesn’t grant exemptions for rape, incest or human trafficking.
