Leonardo Campana Named to MLS Team of the Week
Ecuadorian Inter Miami CF forward Leonardo Campana has been named to the starting XI of the MLS Team of the Week for Week 8 of the 2022 regular season, after recording a goal and the game-winning assist in the 2-1 win over Atlanta United on Sunday, April 24 at DRV PNK Stadium. The victory extended the team’s winning streak to four across all competitions.
Campana, who was named the Heineken Man of the Match for the third time in the past four matches, has been involved in each of the team’s last seven goals across all competitions – a club record – scoring five and assisting two. Additionally, Campana’s five MLS goals in eight games is tied for the second highest goal tally within the league’s top goalscorers, and his 0.91 goals per 90 minutes is the fourth highest in the league (minimum of three goals scored).
The 21-year-old striker leveled the match after bringing DeAndre Yedlin’s cross down with a soft touch and finishing clinically with a left-footed strike in the 28th minute. In the 64th minute, Campana assisted the match-winning goal, unselfishly setting up Bryce Duke for his first-ever MLS goal.
This is the Ecuadorian’s second time featuring in the Team of the Week this season, first appearing in Week 6, when he was also named the MLS Player of the Week after recording the club’s first-ever hat trick. Campana’s inclusion marks the third consecutive week that an Inter Miami player has been named to MLS Team of the Week. Damion Lowe and Aimé Mabika have also been previously named to Team of the Week – the Jamaican in week 1 following his strong Inter Miami debut and Mabika in week 7 after an outstanding performance helping secure a clean sheet and win over the Sounders.
