Leo Campana: Inter Miami’s new star
Inter Miami have rallied in 2022 thanks to an unheralded striker, who in more recent weeks has taken the team by storm and put David Beckham‘s nerves at ease following his club’s miserable start to the season. Leo Campana has taken the spotlight off Gonzalo Higuain, who has missed the last few games through injury, and has become the new hero in Miami.
The 21-year-old Ecuadorian has scored four goals in the last three games. He scored a hat-trick against New England for the first victory of the season, while he scored once more against Miami FC in the third round of the US Open Cup.
His coach Phil Neville is overjoyed with his performances and feels he has earned his place
“Campana played a lot freer without Higuain in the team because he is the man now,” Neville confirmed.
“Sometimes the centre-forward needs to be that person that everyone comes back to see and trusts to score goals.”
Campana’s journey to MLS
Campana arrived in Miami in January from Wolves. The Premier League club signed him in January 2020 for three seasons, but sent him on loan first to Portuguese side Famalicao and then to Swiss side Grasshoppers.
On January 20, 2022, Inter Miami announced his loan signing with an undisclosed purchase option. So, Beckham will have to judge at the end of the year whether they want him to remain or not.
He was always destined to be involved in the world of sport, as he is the son of Pablo Campana, an Ecuadorian businessman and tennis player, who was also Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, and in the 1990s played in the Davis Cup.
At just 21 years of age, the Ecuadorian believes he has a golden opportunity to showcase himself in order to be included in Ecuador’s final squad for the upcoming World Cup.
