NO. 8 BULLDGS DROP GAME TWO AT MIAMI
Oxford, OH – Despite outshooting the RedHawks 44-20, the No. 8 Bulldogs dropped a 4-0 decision to Miami University on Saturday afternoon in Oxford, OH. It’s UMD’s first regulation loss to the RedHawks since November 15, 2019. Paired with their 3-1 win on Friday night, the Bulldogs earn a weekend split with RedHawks.
Junior goaltender Ryan Fanti made his third-straight start between the pipes for UMD and made 16 saves on the night. For the Bulldogs, senior Jesse Jacques posted a team-high nine shots on net, while Darian Gotz, Koby Bender, and Owen Gallatin all tallied eight shots on goal in the loss.
UMD would get the first power-play of the afternoon just a minute into the contest. Solid penalty killing from the RedHawks would deny the Bulldogs an early power-play goal. Moments after the penalty expired, Miami would take their first lead of the weekend. Following a UMD offensive zone turnover, MU’s Brian Silver would break down the ice and beat Fanti high glove to give the RedHawks a 1-0 advantage just 4:05 into the first period. Following the goal, a hooking penalty to Luke Mylymok gave Miami a chance to double their lead. However, UMD would hold Miami to just one shot with the man-advantage and the penalty would be killed. Despite the Bulldogs outshooting Miami 15-9 through the first twenty minutes, the RedHawks would take a 1-0 lead to the second period of play.
The two sides would trade zone time through the first half of the second period. Almost eight minutes into the second, Miami would get the first grade-A chance of the period. The RedHawks would capitalize on a 3-on-1 to extend their lead to 2-0 with twelve minutes left to play in the period. On the ensuing faceoff, a tripping penalty to Miami would give the Bulldogs a quick opportunity to get back into the game. Though UMD would work the puck around nicely on the man-advantage, they were unable to muster a shot on Ludvig Persson and the penalty would be killed. A few minutes later, Owen Gallatin was sent to the box for interference. Miami would convert on the power-play to make it 3-0 with just under eight minutes left in the second. UMD gained some momentum from a late period penalty-kill, but still found themselves in a 3-0 hole after two periods.
The Bulldogs came out and outshot Miami 19-0 in the first sixteen minutes of the third period. However, Miami goaltender Ludvig Persson continued his strong play against UMD to keep the Bulldogs off the board throughout the third period. The Bulldogs would pull Fanti with 3:30 remaining in regulation to try and get something past Persson. After pressuring in Miami zone, the RedHawks would bury an empty-net shot from their own zone to extend their lead to 4-0. Miami would hold on for the win in game two.
