7 more Boston metro communities make million-dollar ‘cities’ list

The million-dollar mark is often a milestone, but when it comes to U.S. home prices it’s quickly becoming nothing noteworthy.

A record-breaking 146 new “cities” saw the typical home price reach a million dollars in 2021, bringing the national total to 481, according to a Feb. 16 report from Zillow

Seven of those new additions were in the Boston metro area — Concord, Cohasset, Hingham, Carlisle, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Sherborn, and Rye, N.H. — bringing the total number of million dollar cities in the area to 18, the fifth most of any metro. New York City and San Francisco topped the list with 76 apiece, followed by Los Angeles with 57 and San Jose with 22.

The number of new million dollar cities last year was almost triple the number in 2020, according to the report, and even more may soon join the club if prices continue to appreciate at the same rate.

The priciest city in the United States last year was Indian Creek, Florida. With a typical home value of $28.3 million, the small island off the coast of Miami is extremely exclusive and is home to just 88 residents (including a certain former Patriots quarterback). The second most expensive city was Atherton, a town in the San Francisco area with a typical home value of $7.7 million. The rest of the top five — Hunts Point, Wash.; Jupiter Island, Fla.; and Sagaponack, N.Y. — all hovered at the $6 million mark, according to the report.

In the Boston area, Weston had the highest typical home value at $1,839,472, according to data from Zillow. Here are 18 metro Boston communities that reached million-dollar status last year and their typical home price:
