‘I Got You, Buddy’: Miami Officer Rescues Dolphin Trapped In Net

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A young dolphin is once again swimming freely after a marine patrol officer with the Miami-Dade County Police Department recently came to its rescue.

According to the Miami-Dade County Police Department, Officer Nelson Silva received a call on regarding a dolphin in distress in the Shorecrest area.

Officer Silva was able to locate the young dolphin trapped in a fishing net.

Video from Silva’s body camera, which his department released Wednesday, showed him using a metal rod to help pull the dolphin closer to his boat in an effort to free him.

“Come on, little guy. Come here!” he said. “It’s OK. It’s OK. I got you.”

In the video, the dolphin seems frightened and not totally sure of what’s going on. As a result, it took Silva several attempts to remove the netting using a small pocketknife.

“Relax, little buddy!” he said. “I got you, buddy.”

Silva never gave up. The third attempt was apparently the charm. He managed to cut the dolphin loose, and it quickly swam away.

“Woohoo, yeah!” Silva yelled in excitement after setting the dolphin free.
